The Highway Code is the set of rules and regulations designed to ensure road safety in the UK. Over the last 12 months, several changes have been made to the Highway Code, intending to improve road safety for all road users.
Our latest blog will look at the fundamental changes and their effects.
Priority for Pedestrians and Cyclists
One of the most significant changes to the Highway Code is the introduction of a hierarchy of road users. Under the new rules, pedestrians and cyclists are given priority over motorists. Meaning that drivers must give way to pedestrians and cyclists when crossing a cycle lane or turning into a side road.
This change aims to improve road safety for vulnerable road users.
Increased Penalties for Dangerous Driving
The penalties for dangerous driving have also been increased; drivers who cause serious injury or death through dangerous driving can now face up to 14 years in prison, up from the previous maximum of 5 years.
The harsher penalties are designed to deter dangerous driving and make the roads safer for all users. However, a recent report by the Ministry of Justice has shown that unsafe driving convictions have increased recently, explaining the necessity to increase penalties.
Use of Smart Motorways
Smart motorways have become increasingly common in recent years, and the new Highway Code rules reflect this. For example, drivers are now required to use the hard shoulder as a running lane during busy periods, and there are new rules on how to use the emergency refuge areas safely.
Smart motorways aim to ease congestion and improve traffic flow, but concerns about their safety have occurred. The new Highway Code rules are designed to address some of these concerns and make smart motorways safer for all users.
However, the Government has announced recently that they will be altering the use and structure of Smart Motorways. We will keep you informed about the details.
Use of Mobile Phones
The use of mobile phones while driving has been a hot topic for many years, and the new Highway Code rules reflect this. Drivers are now prohibited from using a hand-held mobile phone while driving, even if stopped in traffic.
This change aims to reduce the number of accidents caused by distracted driving. Using a mobile phone while driving is a significant distraction and increases the risk of an accident.
You can get six penalty points and a £200 fine if you hold and use a phone, sat nav, tablet, or any device that can send and receive data while driving or riding a motorcycle.
You’ll also lose your licence if you passed your driving test in the last 2 years.
You can get three penalty points if you do not have a full view of the road and traffic ahead or proper vehicle control.
You can also be taken to court where you can:
- be banned from driving or riding
- get a maximum fine of £1,000 (£2,500 if you’re driving a lorry or bus)
Low-Speed Limits in Residential Areas
Finally, the new Highway Code rules include the introduction of 20mph speed limits in residential areas. This change aims to reduce the number of accidents and improve road safety in areas with high numbers of pedestrians and cyclists.
The new speed limits have been implemented in many areas across the UK, and drivers have had mixed reactions. Some drivers feel that the new limits are unnecessary and will increase journey times, while others believe that they will make the roads safer for everyone.
