Taking your car to a garage for a check-up is usually referred to as a car service.
At Tivoli Auto Services, we offer a comprehensive service for not only VW, Audi and Volvo. We also have many years of experience and first-hand knowledge of working with all brands and catering for all premium models.
Our mechanics examine parts and usually replace essential parts that suffer wear and tear. We may suggest further parts be changed, allowing any issues to be spotted and repaired before they become a problem. Regular servicing lengthens the life of a car and can increase its resale value.
What is a car service?
It’s a check-up of your car’s condition. Our mechanics check parts for wear and tear, such as brakes, oil, filters, and engine belts.
We will probably replace your oil filter (if needed), renew the oil and suggest other essential replacements. Servicing can help spot potential problems and fix them on the spot, all helping to extend the life of your car. A full-service history can even boost its resale value.
Is an MOT different from a service?
Yes. Although they often go together, and we may offer a package that includes both, they are not the same.
An MOT is an annual check-up mandated by law for most cars over three years old to ensure they are safe and can be driven on the roads.
A valid MOT is necessary to drive the car.
Regular service of your car is advised to maintain its optimal performance. Manufacturer-specified checks should be included. If your vehicle has it, the service indicator will let you know when it’s time to have a service based on elapsed time and distance.
The manual will contain specifics regarding the suggested servicing schedule for your car. Depending on the model of your vehicle, several manufacturers advise obtaining a service every 10,000 to 20,000 miles.
A standard guide to servicing is:
After six months or 6,000 miles, whichever occurs first – interim service.
After 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first – full service
After 24 months or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first, for a major service.
What does a car service include?
Tivoli provides regular interim, full-car services, and major services.
Visual inspections of your car as part of every service include searching for body or wheel damage. We will also perform manual brake and gearbox inspections to ensure everything operates as it should.
The tests will include your charging port, wires, and connections if you have an electric or hybrid automobile.
Your car service may include the following checks: (depending on the manufacturers’ recommendations)
Oil filter and engine oil
Tyres, bodywork, exhausts, and lights
Steering and braking
Levels of fluids and coolants
Suspension
Battery
During your service, Tivoli will repair deteriorated auto parts and fluids. Be aware that the type of service you schedule will determine how many adjustments and replacement parts you receive.
As highlighted, there are three different categories of car service:
Every 6,000 miles or every six or twelve months, whichever comes first, your car should have an interim service. Again, this depends on the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Lights, brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, and all fluid levels will be checked as part of every service. Another example of an interim service might be:
An oil change
Replacement of the oil filter
Check the drive belt
Every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, a full service is advised.
Everything from an interim service plus additional checks and modifications makes up a full service. For example, a complete service could include the following:
Replacement of the fuel filter (for diesel cars).
Replacement for the air filter.
Inspection of the hoses.
Review of brake shoes
Testing of the wheels.
A recommendation for this might be made after 24 months or 24,000 miles. A major service typically includes extras in addition to all the checks and changes in the full service. A few changes to your car could be:
Replenishment of the brake fluid
Change the odour and allergy filter
Replacement of spark plugs
Checking the automatic transmission’s oil level.
How significant is the maintenance record of a car?
A complete service history might help your vehicle retain value when you sell it. It will demonstrate that it has been well-maintained – and likely result in a higher resale value.
This works both ways when purchasing a second-hand car; another thing to consider is the full-service history. Once more, it demonstrates that the vehicle has been maintained. Conversely, a lack of service records may indicate a past issue with the car.
For peace of mind, Tivoli can offer you a used car vehicle examination regardless of the car’s service history.
