The Government’s New Plan to Support Drivers
As the season changes, the government has announced a comprehensive 30-point plan to support drivers and enhance their daily experience on the road. Transport Secretary Mark Harper presented these measures to ensure that people continue to enjoy the freedom of using their cars, while also addressing over-zealous enforcement measures.
The plan encompasses various aspects, including improving road conditions and easing traffic flow. Some of the key highlights include:
Allocating £70 million to councils to enhance traffic light systems, using AI technology.
Digitisation of traffic regulation orders to enable autonomous vehicles and simplify parking for today’s drivers.
Strengthening guidance to ensure bus lanes operate only when buses are running.
Consultations include removing local authorities’ access to DVLA data for camera enforcement, and limiting surpluses generated from traffic offences.

The plan also focuses on supporting the transition to zero-emission driving.
