Owning a new Electric vehicle (EV) comes with various changes that need to be made. For example, you’ll most likely want to have a charge point installed at your property, and also want to know where the nearest charge points are near to where you work. However, it’s also important to know which the best tyres are for EVs.
What Makes Tyres For EVs Different?
Electric Vehicle Tyres (and tyres for hybrid cars) have to cope with various different forces compared to a car that runs on fuel.
Electric vehicles are generally a lot heavier compared to their combustion counterpart as they contain large battery packs, meaning more force will be applied to the tyres.
Because of this, tyre manufacturers need to produce far stronger tyre sidewalls for their EV ranges to cope with this extra weight. This means the tyres won’t wear quickly or – worst case scenario – get punctures or blowouts.
Electric Vehicle Tyres Must Cope With Instant Torque
The way electric vehicles deliver power is different to cars with a combustion engine. With petrol or diesel cars, their torque builds up as the engine speed rises, but as EVs don’t have an engine – the torque is instant! Tyres for EV cars need to be able to cope with this instant power being put through them.

Braking and decelerating
As electric vehicles generally weigh more, there will be far more demand on the tyres when slowing down. However, since EVs feature regenerative braking, the kinetic energy produced from braking can be stored back in the battery.
In a recent blog of ours, we go into detail on what the advantages of regenerative braking are.
What Are The Best Tyres For EVs?
There is no exact answer to this, since every electric vehicle is different, and your driving style or use of your vehicle may differ from other drivers. However, it is important to always use tyres which are appropriate for EVs, rather than just those for a petrol/diesel car.
Here at Tivoli, we are on hand to help you with choosing and installing the most appropriate tyres for your car and requirements.
Do Expensive Tyres Last Longer?
This is a question that people may ask when looking to buy a new set of tyres for their car. The answer will differ depending on driving style and, therefore, how the car is handled?
For example, you could buy expensive low-profile tyres that are great for grip and track usage, but they won’t last as long as chunky tyres used for motorways.
In a recent blog of ours, we go into detail on this subject – Cheap vs Expensive Tyres: Are Expensive Tyres Worth It?
