Given the circumstances of the last eighteen months and the number of grounded planes at Gatwick and Heathrow, it’s no surprise that the ‘staycation’ has boomed in popularity as a result. In fact, findandfundmycar.com recently conducted a survey that found 54% of people are planning a staycation this year, as opposed to a holiday abroad.
Perhaps this is a wise decision considering the continual changes to the travel traffic light system – it’s difficult to keep track of where we can and can’t go! On top of that, there’s the risk of being stranded in a country or having to rush to book the first flight back.
When it comes to a road trip, you’re much less likely to have this problem. So, whether you’re planning a trip to the Scottish Highlands or a seaside weekend in Brighton, we’ve compiled a list of the essentials below, including how you can prepare your vehicle for the increase in mileage.
What to Pack
· A Navigation System: Whether it be a map, sat-nav or your mobile device, the most important thing you’ll need is some form of navigation assistance. Even if you think you know the way, it’s always best to have at least one of those three with you in case you find yourself in the middle of a field somewhere! You wouldn’t want your staycation to get off to a bad start, so if you’re using a mobile device, make sure it is fully charged, or take an in-car charger with you. At Tivoli, we’d recommend taking a paper map too, as a back-up.
· Car Documentation: You should always keep your essential car documentation with you when driving, especially on long trips. This includes your driving licence, car insurance details, and any breakdown information. For example, if you have breakdown cover with AA or RAC, you’ll need your personal details and account number to hand if you were to breakdown.
· First Aid Kit: In case the worst happens, and a member of your party was to suffer an injury, a first aid kit will prove very useful. In some cases, for minor injuries, it may even help avoid a trip to A&E – not something you’ll want to do and certainly not on holiday!
Essential Vehicle Maintenance
Before (and after) driving your car for an extensive number of miles, it is always best to perform some routine vehicle maintenance and check the levels. This includes the following:
· Oil: The primary function of motor oil is to lubricate any of the moving parts of the engine, and keep everything relatively clean, picking up any bits of dust or dirt within the engine. Without a good amount of oil, your engine would be susceptible to damage from small particles of dust or dirt collecting in the engine.
· Tyres: To ensure your tyres grip the road and remain legally compliant, you should check your tread depth on a regular basis. If the tread depth falls below 1.6mm, your tyres will need replacing. For more information on how to check them, click the link and take a look at this article.
· Lights: You should always ensure your lights are working correctly for the benefit of both yourself and other drivers. If you find a bulb is broken, you will need to replace it immediately with a legal OEM or aftermarket bulb.
· Coolant: Also known as antifreeze, vehicle coolant stops the engine from overheating. Without it, your engine will be at risk.
· Washer Fluid: Driving isn’t safe if you can’t see through your dirty windscreen. Ensure you keep it clear, and the washer fluid topped up!
