There are a number of driving questions that people are not entirely clear on or think they know the answers to, but are actually subject to  common misconceptions. Here we have laid to rest a few uncertainties and hope to clarify a number of issues.

The law is designed to protect people against the dangers and fatalities caused by drivers being distracted by mobile phones. Whilst you are allowed to make a hands free call, the police are still allowed to stop you if they think you are being distracted by a mobile, even if it is hands-free.

Technically, you are not allowed to make contact with your phone and using a phone in your hand whilst driving may get you six points on your licence and a £200 fine, due to the potential danger.

Interacting with your sat nav whilst driving is deemed to be similar to using a mobile phone and it is illegal. As such it can lead to the same penalties as using a mobile phone – 6 points on your licence or a £200 fine.

In short, no. You can be prosecuted at even 1% over the limit. Whilst the police may be allowed to take certain mitigating factors into account to show flexibility for around 10% over the limit, this is entirely down to the discretion of the individual officer.

Basically you now need to know that if your car’s exhaust emits visible smoke of any colour, it will fail its MOT. Mechanics are also required to check if your diesel particulate filter has been tampered with or removed and if there are any signs that it has, then they will not test your vehicle.

If the UK leaves the EU without a deal, you may need an International Driving Permit. This will depend on exactly which country you are visiting. Be sure to check the rules and arrangements for your trip at: https://www.gov.uk/driving-abroad/international-driving-permit
